Designing and Engineering a Pole Camera with Wireless Controls

By July 10, 2018Uncategorized

How do you photograph iconic marine wildlife that may be skittish of a free diver with a camera?  To address this challenge Keith and Dr. Consi engaged MIT student Madison Pickett (as part of Spring 2018 UROP) to develop and build a prototype pole camera system that allows full control of the camera settings (aperture, shutter, focus etc.) via a wireless iPad from a boat while the camera is submerged underwater.

After a few iterations we were able to successfully control the camera within the MIT Sea Grant research pool.  Keith will be travelling to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to field test the pole camera this week.  We wish Madison were able to join but her MIT softball team that just made the world series.
